Benefits of Chiropractic in Sports

September 14, 2017

Have you ever thought why so many athletes are under chiropractic care? From Usain Bolt to Tiger Woods, Venus Williams, Michael Jordan and Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the things these athletes have in common is that they all are under chiropractic care. Not only is chiropractic beneficial to professionals, but amateur and weekend athletes likewise can maximize their athletic performance by utilizing chiropractic. There are numerous studies to support the fact that chiropractic care helps athletes achieve an optimal level of performance.

Here are top 5 reasons why any sports enthusiast might benefit from chiropractic

1.     Fix asymmetries

One major cause for injuries in sports is due to asymmetries in the body, meaning one side of the body is different to the other. Asymmetries might present as differences in posture, strength, or flexibility. Chiropractors are trained to detect and fix asymmetries in the body by using spinal adjustments. This in return reduces the risk of injury when one area of the body won’t be under more stress, rather the body working in harmony to balance the load.

2.     Increasing range of motion

When the joints in your spine lose their mobility, the muscles commonly cramp up in the area causing a decrease in the range of motion. Adjusting spinal misalignments help free up areas of tension in the neck and back, thus reducing pain and improving mobility in the area. Full and pain free range of motion in the spine allows for a better form during exercises.

3.     Drug and surgery free

Chiropractic is completely natural hands on therapy that works without the utilisation of painkillers or surgery. Gentle spinal adjustments will free up the stress on the nervous system allowing the body to heal and function with no interference.

4.     Promotes faster healing

Whenever there is an injury the body tries to protect itself by creating muscle spam and inflammation in the area. By removing many of the common contributors to athletic injuries like poor flexibility, asymmetries in the alignment, and altered nerve function, regular chiropractic adjustments will result in faster healing of any injuries by reducing the associated muscle spasm and stiffness that tends to occur. This will speed up the recovery time and allow return to sports faster.

5.     Prevention of injuries

Longevity on the playing field is critical. Many of the sporting injuries are initiated while training in the pre-competition phase due to factors such as incorrect posture or spinal misalignments, combined with lack of fitness, conditioning and flexibility. Chiropractors are trained to assess the body as a whole, and correct misalignments even when they might not be causing any symptoms to the person. This ultimately reduces the risk of injuries in the first place as the problems are detected before they develop further.
